February 26 - Oil Kings team up for Polio Plus

Congratulations John Wojicki and Edmonton Club...John's message below sums it up. Thanks John and Rotarians - almost $6,00 raised for polioplus.

Thanks also to DGE Harry Buddle for taking shots on goal and for the Rotarians who raised the END POLIO NOW signs and managed the iron lung and passed out information on Rotary and Polio campaign.

WOW!! what a great evening! what a phenomenal team of volunteers! A huge thank you to all of you for helping ensure that this evening unfolded as tremendously as it did (and Dan I don't have Andy's email but pls pass on my thanks to him as well and Randy pls pass on a thanks to the PR folks you rounded up to help as Greeters etc., great job!). And we may have to start a petition to get Cody a raise for all he did that was way above the call of duty.

It was truly heart-warming to see how Rotary Clubs were able to jump on board with this and take this to a whole different level. When I collect all the stories of some of the neat stuff clubs did I will share that with you so you too can enjoy the evidence of Service Above Self.
We had 16 Rotary Clubs get involved and 505 Rotarians and/or their guests at the game. And the best part is we raised some significant $$ for the "End Polio Now" as well as building valuable awareness of that program and Rotary.
It will be interesting to see how this evening looks "on film" - could Hollywood be next? I hear that Universal Studios is looking to make another Mighty Ducks hockey movie and are looking for just the right person to cast as the goalie ... hmm, anyone think of who we might recommend?
I can hardly wait to see what we can do next year ... you good with that DGE Harry?
It's nights like this that truly makes me proud to be a Rotarian!

Rotary Day - February 23rd

Thanks to Edmonton Southeast Rotary Club, our hosts for Rotary Day 2011.

A wonderful gathering of 250+ District Rotarians and friends gathered at the Sawmill Conference Centre for an evening of fellowship and to hear our speaker, His Honour Col. Donald Ethall, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.

Lieutenant Governor Donald S. Ethell is one of Canada’s most decorated peacekeepers and the recipient of numerous honours for his humanitarian service. He was sworn-in as Alberta's 17th Lieutenant Governor on May 11, 2010.

On behalf of District 5370, PDG Cec Blackburn was recognized for his service to Rotary and District 5370 as a Champion of Membership Extension and growth.

Rotarians in 34,000 rotary clubs in over 200 countries are gathering today or this week to recognize the achievements of the past 106 years of Rotary and the work of dedicated Rotarians in Building Communities and Bridging Continents.
We know that this is a great time to be a Rotarian and the best years of Rotary are ahead of us.

Rotary has grown and blossomed in this past century because we have placed Service Above Self, and because we have lived by The Four-Way Test.

And Rotary has grown because Rotarians have never forgotten that what built the very first Rotary club was not service but fellowship. It was the promise of a warm welcome in a strange city that brought the first Rotarians back to their second meeting in Chicago.

The spirit of fellowship and service that has spread around the world from the simple act of one man inviting three of his friends to meet with him to talk about a new idea, the idea of a service club that would be based on fellowship and friendship. What a simple idea, but what a powerful concept!

We are the direct beneficiaries of that new idea proposed by Paul Harris in 1905.

We know there here are millions of people who have benefited as well through our service and programs.

We are reminded that Rotary has been the catalyst to reduce the number of paralytic polio cases in the world from 500,000 in 1979 to less than 2,000 cases last year — a 99.9 percent reduction — and that we are about to eradicate one of the most dreaded diseases in the history of the world. So many Rotarians and friends of Rotary have joined in this $950 million dollar campaign. Two Rotarians from our own District are on their way to India to assist in a National Immunization Day...

50th Anniversary D5360 and D5370 Curling

Thanks to Lacombe and PDG Ed WIllson for organizing the annual District 5360/5370.

DG Al Bergsma from D5360 joined me (DG Jackie Hobal) in welcoming curlers - 38 teams. Winning teams came from Spruce Grove A event, Edmonton Sunrise - B event and Athabasca - C event and Cranbrook - D event.

The fellowship and fun started on Thursday evening and ended on Sunday, February 20th. Costumes, stories and great curling as well as a fantastic evening event with speak Mark Kennedy, Olympic Champion.
